It’s like a child’s right of passage. Before you can flash that beautiful eye batting, world stopping smile, you have to first go through the awkward, sometimes constipated looking “Cheese” Face.

To most, it looks like you are the jerk parent, who took a picture of your child while they were experiencing some serious pain. To the owner of these pictures however, it is an amazing reminder of the journey your child has taken to get to that can’t miss smile they show off today.

My son had a bad case of “Cheese” Face in his younger days but has since powered through and now can hear the sound of the lens opening from a mile away. His transformation seemed to happen overnight, as if the Cheese gods decided his time had come. Here’s a Before and After:

I don’t really understand why we chose the word “Cheese” as our go to slogan for picture taking, although I’m sure there is a very valid reason that I couldn’t really be bothered to look up…. There were many other words we could have gone with, such as:

  • Please
  • Fleas
  • Knees
  • Chemise (For you French folks out there)
  • Sneeze
  • Playstation 3′s (My vote)

Well, You get the point.

My daughter is now embarking on her own “Cheese” Face journey and I’m proud to report that she is showing signs of breaking through it. Admittedly, her adventure was a little rougher than my son’s but there’s something about a little girl’s smile that keeps you coming back for more no matter how painful it looks.

As you can clearly see, the Times They Are A Changin’ and while I’m sad to say goodbye to the “Cheese” Face, I’m happy to be moving into the age of nice family photos! Here we come Santa!

Cheers!
