I’ve learned a few things working in and around successful organizations throughout my career, and I think its safe to say that innovation is the common thread that separates the good ones from the bad.

Good organizations that can anticipate and embrace change are usually the ones that find themselves at the front of the pack. It’s the same for families. It’s about being able to constantly change. Not for change sake, but to make things better.

We need to do this simply to keep good habits moving forward, to end the bad habits, and to enable everyone to do things they could never ever do before. This is obviously easier said than done, but a family that can innovate must first value innovation.

As parents we should recognize this value and then set out to create an environment for our children that empowers them to succeed. Now, this will be different for every family as it is for every business. You’ll need to establish your own definition of innovation based on your own worldview.

But in the end, our families should always strive to provide the fertile ground for inspiration, courageousness, curiosity and passion – these are the key ingredients necessary to help foster the kind of kids that can embrace and affect change in this complex and volatile world we find ourselves.
