His dad killed him.
“That’s Marvin Gaye. His dad killed him.”
I can’t be the only one who immediately thinks about that when he thinks about Marvin Gaye. I somehow managed to avoid telling that to my son when he asked me what CD I was playing in the car, because I didn’t want him to think it was something dads did, but I can’t help associating Gaye with his death.
So I told him it was Marvin Gaye, and bit my tongue as hard as I could.
I can’t be the only one. When you hear an Otis Redding or a Buddy Holly song, you think about plane crushes. When you hear Rock Hudson, you immediately think AIDS. When you hear a song by INXS, you immediately imagine this poor naked guy trying to get a belt off his neck with one hand, while using his other hand to make the best of the situation.
Or am I alone here? Am I morbid and weird, or is it normal?
