We recently went on our first long family road trip, taking the 5-hour drive to San Francisco from Los Angeles.  It was there, at a hotel just outside of the city, where my son said his first word…. “Bar.”

Here’s how it went down…

The Riles family departed from Los Angeles at 7PM, hoping the kids would sleep in the car.

Baby Tommy, who was 8 months old at the time, slept the entire way.  Babs (2.5 years old) didn’t fall asleep…mostly because she was very excited to be wearing pajamas while riding in the car.

We finally made it up north, and checked into our hotel around 12:30AM.  At this point, both of our kids were wide-awake, and extremely happy.

When we made it into our room, Tommy crawled into the bathroom, and started pulling on the telephone which was hanging next to the toilet.  (Pretty nasty, if you ask me).  To Babs…this may have been the funniest thing she had ever seen, and she has talked and laughed about it every day since.

“Memba when Tommy was pullin’ down the tell-ee-phone, Daddy?”

The kids played for a good hour, and did not want to go to sleep.  Eventually, we had no choice but to put them in their beds.  Neither of them was having it.

They screamed.  They cried.  When Tommy would finally calm down, Babs would let out a sarcastic “Waaaaaaa,” which got Tommy going again.

Eventually it was quiet.  Then, out of nowhere, Tommy started yelling…

“Bar…Bar…Bar…Bar…Bar…Bar…Bar…”

I looked at the clock, and it was 2AM.  No bars were open in California at that time.  Plus, he can’t legally drink yet.

Then we realized he was calling out for his big sister, Barbara, to stay up and keep crying with him.

Whether he was trying to get permission to go to his first pub, or saying his sister’s name, my son’s first word was “bar.”

I’ll drink to that.
