The last post in this week long series of inspirational messages from Ghostbuters.  This final one is near and dear to my heart, and has been the subject of several previous posts. They go up

If you uttered this phrase to just about any human on this Earth…save for me…it wouldn’t register.  You would get a lot of dumb looks, maybe a few insults, but definitely not a knowing nod.

But I’m not most people.  You utter this phrase to me, and not only will Ghostbusters instantly pop into my head, but you’ll be subject to a lecture about the simple perfection of this line.  Hey, you can have your “beautiful friendships” and “Frankly my dears”…this is my pinnacle movie line. (To prove this fact, this is the 3rd blog post I’ve written featuring this line, plus I’ve used it in my last farewell email from a job)

Why is it such a great line?  Well, isn’t that what we’re here talking about?

It’s at a moment, when things look horrible.  The boys have just walked up thousands of stairs, and into the apartment of their first client…and it’s destroyed.  They have no real clue what to do next, but they know they are the only ones that can save humanity.  They are at the lowest point…even lower then when they face Gozer and look to be defeated…

Think about it, when you are facing the challenge…when your feet are to the fire, and you KNOW what you’re up against, your mind doesn’t have time to feel low.  Your mind is focused on the task at hand.  But when you don’t know what the real issue is, but you know that things really suck…that’s a moment of pure hopelessness.  That’s your low point…

And in that moment, they spot a staircase…a staircase they had never seen, nor knew existed…and…

They go up.

And with that…hope is restored.  While it’s not the goal they were looking for, it’s a goal.

It’s a moment and a line that has come to mean many things to me.  At the point of complete hopelessness, they now have some hope.  At a moment they weren’t looking for it, an opportunity presented itself.

Everyone of us will lose hope…everyone of us will stumble upon an opportunity…just remember…

They go up.
