On each of the 30 days leading up to Father’s Day, Life of Dad will feature a different great dad from around the world.
Andy Hinds, the man behind Beta Dad and contributor to DadCentric and Aiming Low, is a 45-year-old stay-at-home dad of twin girls who are about to turn 3. They recently started going to preschool 2 days a week, which means that he’s supposed to be looking for a job. He lives in San Diego and has decided he’s just going to go surfing instead.
I really became a father when… I started yelling at drivers on my street to “Slow Down!!!!”
My kids makes me laugh… whenever they open their mouths. They regularly spout nuggets of profound absurdity. For example: “We snuggled in the couch and called it winter. Then we called winter ‘cake.'”
Favorite daddy cocktail once the kids crash? Why wait until they crash? Stone IPA, Malbec, or Bourbon.
Dream date night with your lady, where would you go? Luxury spaceliner orbiting Earth, with dinner prepared by Thomas Keller and music provided by Flight of the Conchords.
What is the hardest thing about fatherhood? Acceleration of the aging process/sudden inability to deny immortality.
What’s in your man cave? Skeletons.
How many hours of sleep each night? I probably average about 5. If it weren’t for the internet, that number would be more like 8 or 10.
What food that your daughter eats do you like the most? Chocolate Joe-Joes (Trader Joe’s version of Oreos.) I think I’ll have a couple right now.
How has fatherhood changed in the last 20 years? I think the expectations have changed quite a bit. Dads today are more likely to get their hands dirty in terms of day-to-day parenting tasks, and be involved in the emotional lives of their kids. 20 years ago, if a dad had a job and didn’t beat the kids, he was probably considered a pretty good father. Of course, that’s a big generalization. I’m sure there were plenty of involved dads 20 years ago, but it wasn’t because there was a lot of societal pressure to do so.
Dream family vacation? Costa Rica. For at least 8 weeks.
