On each of the 30 days leading up to Father’s Day, Life of Dad will feature a different great dad from around the world.
Today we feature James Winters, a father of two, as well as a very creative filmmaker and musician. James recently released his tribute to the Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. In James’ tribute, which you’ll see below, his kids star in a re-make of the “Sabatoge” music video. But first, here is James’ interview…
I really became a father when… I put my rock ‘n roll and film making ambitions on hold so I could pull in a steady paycheck.
My kids make me laugh when… they do their interpretive dances.
Favorite daddy cocktail when the kids crash? These days it’s usually some Mad Men straight up with a chaser of Breaking Bad or some Daily Show. Formerly I was a Kentucky bourbon/ PBR kind of man.
Dream date night with your lady, where would you go? Recently spent a night walking around NYC. We ate at Katz deli then walked over the Williamsburg bridge and saw the Bad Brains share a bill with the GZA from Wu Tang Clan. We tailgated with an old friend before the show and then ate falafel before a subway ride back uptown to the hotel. Pretty much a perfect night. Thanks to Paula and Brian Dailey for the babysitting!
What is the hardest thing about fatherhood? I’d say it’s those moments when I have to turn away or lock the door or go to work when the boys are ready for some daddy time. I always walk away thinking about the opportunities I’m missing with them.
What’s in your man cave? The MC is filled with my old LP’s and comic book collection, a broken bass guitar, a million cables and adapters, my camera gear, video editing suite and some choice B-movie posters.
How many hours of sleep each night? That’s a touchy subject. Three to five hours a night.
What food that your kids eat do you like the most? I like the Mac n Cheese, the noodles, all the bad stuff.
How has fatherhood changed in the last 20 years? Is 20 years a long time? I’m definitely from a “Peter Pan” generation so I guess that makes my kids the “lost boys”. Let’s go fight some pirates, men!
Dream family vacation? Neverland? An island would be nice, sans pirates, though.
