On each of the 30 days leading up to Father’s Day, Life of Dad will feature a different incredible father from around the world.
Today we meet Trey Flynn. Born Joseph C. Flynn III, Trey says that his parents knew he wouldn’t be classy enough to be a “III.” Trey is a great husband, a world renowned lawyer, and the father to a strong 7-month old congenital heart defect survivor, Holden. You can read Holden’s inspirational story at www.tinmanflynn.blogspot.com. Now, on to Trey’s interview…
I really became a father when… I held my son for the first time. Because of Holden’s CHD, it was museum rules for the first 48 hours. I’ve always had a fear of holding babies, but when that 4 lbs 13oz bundle of joy was finally placed in my arms I melted. My fear quickly subsided, and before you knew it he was home and I was Heisman posing with him.
My son make me laugh when… he rants. Holden takes issue with almost anything and everything anyone has to say. There is no crying, he’ll just incoherently squawk for minutes on end. I see a career in cable news. See evidence below…
Favorite daddy cocktail once the kids crash? I’m a beer guy. However, I’ve branched out into the decadence known as wine in my old age. If I’m drinking brown it’s bourbon. Straight please.
Dream date night with your lady, where would you go? Prom. Just kidding. We’re laid back, I’d say a nice lakeside restaurant with some good eats, cocktails, and live jazz. Maybe include a mosquito net for the misses, as she seems to be a magnet for those suckers. Got to prevent the yellow fever.
What is the hardest thing about fatherhood? Leaving the kid every morning when I go to work.
What’s in your man cave? The room that is now marked as the guest bedroom? Two signed and framed pictures. One of the 2006 NCAA Championship Florida Gator basketball team. The other of Urban Meyer. A copy of Tombstone. A Super Nintendo (not much of a video game guy, but the original Mario Kart is a thing of beauty). I’ve got this 1950s keg-o-rator that my wife makes me leave on the porch. I bought it at a garage sale in Ohio for $10 back in 2005. Thing is worth a lot. One day I’ll restore it. Swear.
How many hours of sleep each night? With a pair of Bose Noise Cancelling headphones on? A solid 8, easily. Without? It varies. (At this point Trey picks up his coffee and sips)
What food that your kids eat do you like the most? I’ve subjected my taste buds to the gruel-like substance known as rice cereal.
How has fatherhood changed in the last 20 years? The Internet has changed everything. Before the internet people had to reach out to their own fathers for advice. That isn’t a bad thing, I put a lot of stock in what my dad has to say. However, 20 years ago they were all product of 50s dad, which is just a whole other breed of being. One day I’ll write about 50s dad.
Dream family vacation? Costa Rica or Ireland. Take your pick.
Besides catching Trey at Tin Man Flynn, make sure you follow him on Twitter! We couldn’t be happier to have Trey here as a big part of Life of Dad, the first social network for fathers.
