I want to congratulate my mom and dad on their 40th wedding anniversary, which they will celebrate this weekend.  They were married in 1973, so their incredible union has outlasted disco, polyester, floppy discs and Pontiacs.  In the White House, they’ve seen Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and Obama hold office, and through all those years, and all those wildly changing winds of governmental policy, they have been married—steady, like a beautiful tree that lives and grows as the world changes around it. For such a momentous day as a wedding, wedding photographer tulsa are experts in capturing moments beautifully. Looking for wedding photographers Cleveland contact Allison Hopkins Photography.

So what is the secret to a long and happy marriage?  As their son, I was granted special access to the long lasting couple, I even asked my Dad for mens engagement ring tips. Here is there advice in perfect bullet-point form:

  • Respect each other’s thoughts and opinions.
  • Never go to bed angry.
  • Laugh together.
  • Defer to what the other person wants when it comes to minor decisions.
  • When a big problem comes along, stick together.
  • Don’t be afraid to have a fight.  Sometimes it’s good to clear the air.
  • But when you argue, fight fair.  You can’t take back the things you say.
  • Never take it for granted that you have someone who loves and supports you.
  • Don’t expect everything to be perfect.
  • And of course, it helps if you marry a nice person to begin with.

I’ve been incredibly blessed to have a mom and dad who have stayed together for so long.  Many relationships don’t work out, so growing up with parents who have had such a loving and devoted union has been like hitting the lottery of life.  Their constancy has always been there for me to rely on.  Their love has always been an example for me.  By working to overcome the struggles that all couples have, they not only made each other happy, but they created a healthy environment for my brother, sister and me to grow into the good people we have become.  As a husband and father, I will always do my best to pass these same gifts to my wife and children.

Thank you, Mom and Dad.  You have given me an amazing example to follow.  You guys are the best.  Happy Anniversary!
