Did you ever have a nickname that wasn’t so flattering?
Maybe in school or on a sports team?
Well last Saturday I got to experience a not so nice nickname that my daughter gave me. Now it wasn’t out of anger or spite. It was really innocent and pretty darn funny.
My wife was out getting her hair cut and it was just me and my daughters. They were looking for something to do. They were sooooooo bored. They asked if they could play on their iPads, but I said no. I told them that we should do something together.
While they were moaning about not having some cherished iPad time I went over to our dry erase easel and started drawing some caricatures of my daughters. They came over to see what I was doing and started to laugh. They wanted to take turns at drawing each other.
At first it started out very harmless. We all had taken a few turns and each round started getting sillier and sillier.
My oldest daughter looked to push the envelope and test out the comedic waters. I saw her stall for a bit. She looked at me with a hopeful gaze and then went to work. She started to draw one circle and another.
My youngest asked her sister what she was drawing. She told us that she was drawing me. Once she was finished I saw a stick figure with what looked like two heads, but it only had two eyes and one mouth.
I asker her why I had two heads. Without skipping a beat she replied that it wasn’t two heads, but one big butt. We all started to laugh.
She then gave a name to that drawing. She said, “Look, it is Daddy Butt Crack!”
This was the moment of truth. Do I laugh? Do I scold her? She is showing some disrespect to her father, but man that was pretty darn funny.
I couldn’t help but laugh. As soon as my kids saw that it was okay they joined in on the laugh. We were laughing for a bit and then as the giggles subsided, my oldest erased the picture and we moved onto something else.
Later that day we were eating lunch in the backyard on our picnic table. My wife and I were cleaning up while the kids were finishing up their lunch. My oldest was saying something to us and I didn’t hear it fully. I asked her to repeat it by saying, “What was that? Daddy Butt Crack didn’t hear that since he has no ears.”
Even though my back to to my wife I felt her eyes staring right at me. I turned to look at her. She gave me the look. I forgot that she wasn’t in on the joke. I could tell she wanted an explanation so I showed her the picture of Lily’s drawing since I took one from my phone.
My wife started laughing. Her laugh was so loud that even though all the windows and doors were closed our kids heard the laughter outside. They came running into the house to see what was so funny. I told them that I showed mommy the picture that Lily drew of me.
We all started to join in on my wife’s laughter.
Thankfully my kids are smart enough not to use that nickname for me or anyone since it is not that nice.
Nicknames that people gave me in the past never really stuck with me. I’m happy to see that trend still continue!
