On each of the 30 days leading up to Father’s Day, Life of Dad will feature a different incredible father from around the world.
Today we meet Trent Hamilton. Thanks to the childbirth skills of his lovely wife, (they are sweethearts since their days at Texas A&M), Trent just last week became a father for the second time! Finley is now only one week old,and he’ll always look up to his heroic brother, Tucker, who is 2.5. Tucker was born with a congenital heart defect, has survived open-heart surgery, and has led his parents to start to inspirational blog, Green Eggs and Hamiltons. Now on to the interview of this 7th grade assistant principal, husband, father, and legend, Trent Hamilton…
I really became a father when… I cut the umbilical cord. That moment, for me, is when it became real. Up until then, he was this mythical being that existed on a sonogram screen. Once I cut the cord, he became mine and it all hit me.
My oldest son makes me laugh when… he makes up words to songs. He know several songs from Barney, Dora, and such, and sometimes he will sing those tunes but with his words. For instance, one time I told him to back up, so he started singing, “back up, back up,” to the tune of Dora’s backpack song. He is only two, so I think this is especially creative and funny.
Favorite daddy cocktail once the kids crash? Bushmills Irish Whiskey with Coke and it’s good any time of the day!
Dream date night with your lady, where would you go? My dream date night would be to eat at Houston’s steak house in Dallas and go to see a non-kid movie.
What is the hardest thing about fatherhood? Balancing work with family time…and telling the kids “no” when they are being really cute!
What’s in your man cave? My man cave is a shed that I built a couple of years ago. It contains my lawn mower, my weed whacker, my ladder, my tools, and a bunch of other junk. It is the only space that is 100% mine!
How many hours of sleep each night? Tucker sleeps about 12 hours each night, so I usually get about 8 good hours of sleep. This will all change with the new baby, but I can dream of my 8 hours, right?
What food that your son eats do you like the most? My son’s favorite food is pizza and I would have to agree with him.
How has fatherhood changed in the last 20 years? I would say that when you get down to it, fatherhood is the same today as it was 20 years ago, just with less beatings! We have different things to deal with now, but kid’s problems are still kid’s problems. Technology can make things more difficult, but it can also be a big help. Imagine if our dads had help from Netflix, when we were young!
Dream family vacation? My dream family vacation would be to go to Disney World, stay in a resort, and get to cut in all of the lines, because we all know that Disney World is the happiest place on Earth!
Besides catching him at Green Eggs and Hamilton, Trent is also a writer on a fantastic CHD supporting website, Heartwaves. Of course, you can also find Trent on Facebook and Twitter! We couldn’t be happier to have Trent here as a big part of Life of Dad, the first social network for fathers.
