As a Star Wars fan, I had a moral dilemma.  The dilemma was this.  Do I show my daughter Episode 1 in 3D (The Phantom Menace, from the latest trilogy) at the theatre, or Episode 4 (A New Hope, from the classic trilogy) first?  I sought wisdom, heard both sides of the argument, and ended up taking her to see The Phantom Menace .  I never regretted the decision.  I know, I know, what kind of dad starts their kids off on Episode 1?  I figured it was better to introduce her to the classic series on a grand scale in a movie theatre.

The good news is she loved the movie.  Ok, maybe her favorite part was Princess Amidala and her dresses, but nevertheless, she was hooked on Star Wars.  Over the last year or so, I worked hard to show her the important part Star Wars can play in her life.

As I dad, I am always looking for more ways to hangout with my kids and connect with them.  Star Wars is one way that works in our family.  Another way that I found is through making school lunches for my daughter.  Over the last year I made a special lunch every week for my daughter.  These fun meals ranged from Disney Princesses to Lego lunches.  It caused me to pay attention to what she was interested in, gave us something to talk about, and helped her look forward to Kindergarten.  Some of her favorites were the Star Wars lunches.  The best lunch might have been Chewbacca.

I thought I’d introduce the Life of Dad crowd to my lunch blog by sharing the recipe for my Chewbacca lunch.  I hope to encourage you (and give you cheat sheets and recipes!) to take the extra step in making meals for your family.  I am convinced any dad can make this, or any of my lunches from lunchboxdad.com.  Just try it out and see.  Your kids will love you for it!  Even if it isn’t perfect, they will feel special and it might just give you some great memories.  So come on dads, step it up and serve your kids some Wookie for lunch!

Ingredients: 2 slices whole wheat bread, 1 serving low fat creamy peanut butter, 1 serving Nutella hazelnut spread, 1 handful of blackberries, 2 drops of fat-free cream cheese, 1 banana, Yellow, blue, and red food coloring or food coloring markers

Directions:

  1. Cut a simple half “head” shape out of 2 slices of whole wheat bread as shown in picture.
  2. Spread Nutella around the edges of his face to make the darker fur.  Use peanut butter to create the lighter fur.  Use Nutella to make the darker “mustache” area above the mouth.  Take a toothpick and blend the edges of light and dark together while also making lines to create a look of fur.  This doesn’t have to be exact, because his fur is messy anyway!
  3. Mix equal parts yellow, blue, and red food coloring in a small bowl to make the color black.  Dip the end of a toothpick in the black coloring and use it to draw the eyes, nose, and mouth details on Chewbacca’s face.  Use drops of cream cheese for the teeth.
  4. Cut 3 slices from the banana.  Trim the round slices into the shape of a Tie-Fighter as shown in the picture.
  5. Place the undecorated slice of bread in your container, then set the decorated slice on top of it. Arrange the blackberries and banana Tie-Fighters around Chewbacca’s head until you are satisfied with the placement.  You might have to trim the blackberries to fit in the space provided.
