Cowboy Bean Bake
Well, I have been visited by the ghost of Christmas past-so to speak. I recently have been talking to a good friend about cooking. Getting into it for the first time, I got to see some real genuine passion, the excitement. I felt like Willy Wonka feeding into the imagination and wonder section of his mind. It reminded me of those first experiences in the kitchen, not knowing what to do during those experimental sessions. So, this brings me to the cowboy bean bake. A secret weapon in your arsenal. It’s a simplistic, rustic dish that takes little effort and tastes great. One warning though… Beware the aftermath that follows, it’s “grub with gas”.
What’s in it?
Beans beans beans! – the more beans the better
Red kidney beans – 1 tin
Navy beans – 1 tin
Pinto beans – 1 tin
Favia beans – 1 tin
1 Chicken breast
1 good sized frying steak
1 pack of bacon
1 pack of small breakfast sausages (optional)
1 tin of tomatoes
1 cup of gravy granules
1 good splash of your favourite hot sauce – I recommend something with a Smokey flavour
What’s next?
Sometimes the best tasting food is the one that takes the least effort! You don’t have to go all out to make a good meal!
So, grab a large saucepan and roll up your sleeves!
First, open your tins of beans. You want to really wash these to make sure you get rid of all the contents apart from the actual beans. Little tip-open the lid of the tin but leave it resting on top of the can. Let water run over the lid of the tin allowing the water in washing the beans and the excess will just flow over. Occasionally, tip upside down to drain. Empty the contents into your sauce pan. Empty the tinned tomatoes into the pan and then fill the tin half way full of cold water and add to the mix. Chop up your meat into good sized chunks (you don’t want them cut too small as they will reduce in size as you’re cooking) add your splash of hot sauce, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Finally, add your gravy then leave it on a medium heat for around an hour and that’s it. Simple start and stop cooking. Not hard, but will leave you wanting more.
That’s it?
