Captain’s Log.  Spring Break Chronicles.  Diaper Date 1663.  It is the second official day of my Spring Break (I don’t count the weekends..everybody gets those).  I am home alone – with the children.  This event further solidifies my belief that you should have to pass a test in the hospital before you take your kid home.  I mean you have to pass a test to drive a car – why not to take care of another human being(s).  But, tons of people ask that – not a new concept.

I have my hands full.  All three of us are sick to some degree.  Mrs. Captain didn’t sleep last week night, so she is battling as well.  It is midday here in sunny Indiana and all are sleep – except me.  I am afraid if I lay my head down then I might not hear the Diaper Dweller when he announces his presence with authority (Bull Durham reference).  I am 90 sure I will hear him, but that 10% is strong.

What have we done today?  I have prevented the mass consumption of a large quantity of tissues.  Cooked breakfast and lunch.  Managed to administer most of a dosage of medicine – the other part when in the Diaper Dweller’s ear.  Don’t ask.  Played catch, read books, colored, and even helped solve a mystery.  Okay, made that last part up, but I did get in a load of laundry.  So who cares?

Today has given me further appreciation of single parents and the stay at home dads and moms.  Anyone who says that they are lazy and need to get a job – is an idiot.  Are there some that are lazy?  I’m sure – just as sure that some of the working moms and dads are lazy too.  But any parent who truly cares about the development of their child as a whole person and takes the time to foster that growth is far, far from lazy.  The Captain would like to give a big shout-out to all those hardworking parents – whether you punch a clock at a job to provide for your family or “work” (I put work in quotes because while it is work – I don’t want to insult the role of a parent with such a haphazard term.  That’s like saying you babysit your kids.)  the time at home with your kids – I salute you.  Special shout-out to Mrs. Captain who does this whilst the Captain is coaching and directing.  I know it isn’t easy.

My time is short – the laundry needs changed, the dishes done, and the Diaper Dweller is stirring.  I will chat with you all again soon.

Captain Out…
