On the opening night of the Dad 2.0 summit in Houston, I witnessed the Great Dad Cook-Off, which pitted four finalist dads against each other in a timed culinary competition. To be selected as a final contestant, these dads had to submit a recipe to ReadySetEat.com, which had no more than 7 ingredients and could be prepped and cooked in under 30 minutes. The competition was wild and fun with hundreds of spectators crowding around the arena of battle, cheering on the kitchen combatant they wanted to see victorious. The hiss of hot pans and the sizzle of sauces rose over the shouts of the gallery as know-it-all fathers like myself yelled advice along with encouragement to the gladiators.
After thirty minutes, a buzzer ripped through the noise, and the four dads stood before the masterpieces they had created. We as the audience were then allowed to inspect, taste and judge the quartet of dishes, passing our vote to ConAgra and ReadySetEat via Twitter. Bobblehead Dad, Jim Higley, won the event with his recipe for Peanut Noodles and Chicken Skewers, which I must admit was delicious. Any man can look like a real-deal, bonafide chef by whipping up this simple, yet impressive meal. Congrats, Jim! You are a hero to us all. Now let’s eat.
