Sometimes, it is hard to know as a dad if we are doing a good job. Being a father and raising a child is like buying a stock and never looking at the price again for 15-18 years. Did we succeed? Is the company still in business? Where did I put any of that paperwork anyway??

Here are some sure ways to know, right now, that you are doing a good job, dad!

Richard Wilkins: When your son drops everything he is doing to run into your arms when you walk in from work…my favourite time of the day!

Robert Slavkin: When I was sick, being treated for leukemia, and my son came to tuck me in one night, saying, ” You always tuck me in. I thought you could use a break tonight.”

Rickey Sellers: When my son walks up out of nowhere and says “I love you daddy”.

Marc O. Pollo: your kid drops the game device, forgets about SpongeBob on the TV (that you don’t dare change), jumps out of the recliner they were sitting in upside down & runs over to you at the computer to tell you to “TURN IT UP” on Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” … and then you proceed to sing along together. I had a little tear slide down my cheek & right then, I knew I did alright.

Bo Bacot: Your kid makes you gut-laugh.
Bonus points if your laughing so hard at your kid makes your kid start laughing, and then you start laughing even harder at your kid laughing, and then y’all end up rolling in hysterics for several minutes, until you both have to stop desperate for breath, with your sides hurting.

Alfredo Quiznos: My 2 yr old son hides between my legs even his face if he’s in a uncomfortable mood or doesn’t want to talk to someone. Maybe he’s shy right now but aside from that I feel like I’m doing a good job in showing him I’m there to protect him.

Bill Cherfoli: You offer to buy your son a hot wheel at the store and he says… “Thanks dad, but I already have a lot, I don’t need any more”. My 3 year old son already had a grip on not needing material things in excess. Moments like that can open the eyes of us adults.

Robert Williams: When your children achieve their own goals as they are growing up. Not what you want for them but what they want to achieve and they get it done.

Mark Seyfried: When you take your daughters to a week at summer camp, they walk to the back of the van, give you a kiss, say goodbye then pick up their bedroll, suitcase and backpack and walk to the cabin yelling over their shoulder “see you on Friday”. Yeah, my 9 and 13 yo both did that this week as we dropped them off! Prepping them for the world!

Josh Rickard: When your kiddos are happy and learning the stuff you’re teaching them.
And following you around like a shadow at home.

Luke Miltenberger: You see your kids (boys in my case) do things for others without being prompted. My son holds doors for others and my oldest (14)went out of his way to help 10 year old that tripped over a music stand. It’s the little things they do without thinking they’re being watched.

Charley Ray: Your kids argue about whether the X-wing or the A-wing is the better medium range intercept craft.

Jerry Nunneley: When your peers all ask you how did you raise three outstanding children!
